Complete walkthrough

English version of the game

King Kong is very ill and needs a blood transfusion. His only hope is Lady Kong, but she is imprisoned on the Golnebo island. You are in the role of Mitchel, with a difficult mission. You need not only to fight against enemies, but also to solve enigmas that are in different messages and you will get them by visiting cabins or killing some enemies.

Konami releases in 1986 his first RPG and it is conceived for the MSX2 system ! The game was for a long time difficult to play as it was only released in Japanese. Then it was translated in French on a very free way before that Imanok, a Spanish fan, starts the English translation. He made it twice, as his first translation in 2000 was based on the French translation. Since 2005, we have finally a real English translation of the Japanese version.

As it is a very long adventure, it's strongly recommended to make saves on a regular basis. On an emulator, the best option is the using of the CPU save states feature. On a real machine, you need to run Hinotori in slot 1 and King Kong 2 in slot 2 to be able to use the keys F4 (saving on tape) and F5 (loading).

The fights against the different enemies give generally experience points, but in some cases, you will acquire magic points, money bags, healing herb or some meat.

During the game, try to remember the places where you can get these points or items : if you come back to these places after being through generally 3 screens beyond or before, you will find back the monsters whose death will allow to increase your stocks !

In some situations, a little doll will appear to bring a message. After each serie of 100 experience points, your level in the game will be increased by one unity and your vitality by 5 unities.

Tip : Press on TAB + F1 + SPACE when launching the game to start directly at level 10; if you replace F1 by F2, F3, F4 or F5, you will start at level 20, 30, 40 or 50

To access to the inventory of the items you own, you need only to press on the F2 key. The selection of an item can be made by the cursors and the spacebar; most items need to be selected if you want to use them, but for some items, their simple owning is enough to progress in the game.

You must notice that the inventory is in 3 parts : the weapons for the slot 1, the magical items for the slot 2 and the "speed" section where you can increase the hero's speed when you have reached the levels 10, 20, 30, etc .... and select the Water Sandals.

To use a weapon selected in slot 1, you need only to press on the spacebar. To use a magical item selected in slot 2, you must press on Shift. Special case : for the Whirl Spell, pressing on Shift is enough to use in a rotating attack the weapon present in slot 1.

The weapons

You can find and use different weapons in your quest. Take care to use them at the good moments, combined or not with a magical item !

Axe : you need to kill 15 bowlers to get it
Long Sword (hidden in a money bag) : this weapon can't be found in the game; however, if you enable cheats of some emulators, you can use it
Kong's Claw : you need to kill the Third Boss to get it; this weapon is absolutely required to kill the Fourth Boss
Stones : you need to kill the Second Boss to get them; other monsters can also give some stones; you will need them to kill the Fifth Boss
Fireballs : you need to kill the cavemen to get it; this weapon is very poweful but in limited amount

The walkthrough

This step by step is largely inspired by the walkthrough mentioned above in the useful links. Actually, it is its illustrated version, as it comes with many screenshots !
    Area 1 - The Grasslands

Enter the first cabin to know the goal of your mission. Go to the top to kill pigworms, wildboars and poisonfrogs. Take the money bags and enter the shop to buy the Knife and select it.
Go to the top, then to the left to kill the grassogres by moving a stone. Repeat that as you must kill 15 grassogres to get the Rod.
Go to the right and attack the First Boss : THE BIG SPIDER. When it is defeated, you'll get the Wood Key (it will not appear in your inventory).
Kill the bucklers by attacking them from behind, then go to the top to visit the sorcerer's cellar. Go to the right and kill the grassworm. Kill then the three ratts to get Herb. Repeat that to have a good stock !
Go back to the shop, select the Rod and go to the bottom to attack the Second Boss : The CLUBMAN. Your victory will give you the Stones. Besides, you will see the opening of two new ways ! Be sure to be at least level 2 in your profile before going beyond this point.
    Area 2 - The Mountains

Go to the north and kill three times the Centipede. Go to the right, then the bottom. In the first cabin, take the Letter (it will not appear in your inventory). The other cabins allow to find back some vitality by eating or resting. There's also a 4th cabin before an impressive Kong's statue.
Go to the left, then the top. Kill 15 bowlers to get the Axe. Go to the right, then the bottom. A sorcerer will give you the Temusa Spell. Go to the top, then the left to kill the thickskins by attacking them from behind : you'll get the Whirl Spell.
Go to the bottom, to the crossing at the begining of area 2. Go to the right and kill three times the Centipede. Kill eventually 15 sealouses to get Herb. Select the Rod and the Whirl Spell to fight against the Third Boss, THE RED FISHMAN. By defeating him, you will be able to get the Kong's Claw.
Go to the top, to the place where you got the Whirl Spell, select the Kong's Claw and go to the left to fight against the Fourth Boss, THE RED SPIDER. After your victory, you'll get a Papyrus and the access to area 4 will be opened.
Go to the bottom, to the location of the wildboars. Select the Stones and go to the left for the fight against the Fifth Boss, THE GRIZZLY. Your victory will open the access to area 3.
    Area 3 - The Forest

Go the left, avoid the grounder and the firetotems. Go to the right to kill the bowlers. Visit the cabins to take back vitality, buy Water Sandals (they will be displayed in the "speed" section of your inventory) and a Book. Select from now the Water Sandals.
Go to the left and take the bottom way. Kill the men with boomerang to get Boomerangs. Select this weapon and kill 15 firetotems to get the Club.
Go to the top to kill the falconers and the falconbats. By killing these last ones, you'll get some Meat. Repeat that to have a good stock ! Go to the left and eventually the bottom : if you kill a second Grizzly, you'll get also some Meat ! Go then to the top : the guardian will ask for Meat to let you pass the first barrier.
Kill the dungrolls to get Stones. Don't enter the cabin with a spider's web or you'll need to heal the sting with some Herb. Go to the right, you'll find two cabins, one to rest, one to exchange Meat for an Iron Key. Actually, you'll get it even if you don't have any Meat !
Select the Iron Key to open the second barrier. Two new cabins ! If you accept to heal the tribe's chief with 5 Herbs, he will thank you by opening the third barrier and giving the Dorian Fruit.
    Area 1 - The Grasslands

Go back to area 1 and select the Temusa Spell to shatter the 4 tombstones. Start with the top tombstone, then go to the left. The 2nd secret cave can't be entirely explored at the moment, as a part is in the dark and infested with monsters.
The 3rd tombstone will give you the Sword. Select this weapon before entering the 3rd secret cave, whose a part is also inaccessible, as it is protected by a barrier. Kill a maximum of whitefires to increase the level in your profile at least to 7.
    Area 2 - The Mountains

Go to area 2 to use the Temusa Spell on the tombstone near the bowlers, then enter the 4th secret cave. Kill the whitefires to get the Liquid of Lamera. The second part of this cave is in the dark, but it is also without any monster. So, it's not too difficult to acquire the well visible items : the Nemuri Spell and one or two Papyri.
    Area 4 - The Marsh

Leave this cave and go the left, then to the top. Select the Kong's Claw to kill the mirefrogs and proceed to increase the level in your profile to 17. Go then to the right and the top to kill the mireworn. Go to the right to visit the cabins, but don't exchange your sandals ! On the other hand, you will be very happy to acquire a talisman, the Kong's Fang.
    Area 1 - The Grasslands

Go back to the 3rd secret cave, select the Kong's Fang and use it to open the fourth barrier. Take then the Amulet.
    Area 4 - The Marsh

Go back to the marsh, but go this time to the top instead of going to the right. Select the Stones and the Nemuri Spell to fight against the Sixth Boss, MUDARMOR. Your victory will open the way to the second part of this area.
Go to the left and kill the blowmires many times to reach level 20 (and speed 2) in your profile. Use the Temusa Spell to shatter the tombstone and access to the 5th secret cave.
Enter this cave and kill a maximum of watchmen to reach level 27 in your profile. The death of all watchmen on the last screen will make appear stairs.
Select the Kong's Claw and the Whirl Spell before entering these stairs which lead to the fight against the Seventh Boss, THE BIG GUARD. If you defeat him, you'll get an Iron Key to open the fifth barrier, release the tribe's chief and acquire the Makapora Spell.
Leave this cave and go to the first part of area 4. Check if you have at least 10 magic points. In stead of visiting the cabins, go to the left to fight against the Eighth Boss, THE NASTY and his gargoyles by using the Makapora Spell. Your victory will open the access to area 5 and you will acquire the Harpoon.
    Area 5 - The Ruins

Go to the top, choose the external way to go to the right and kill the two crows. Go then to the bottom.
    Area 6 - The Sea

Don't eat in the first cabin, it would affect your vitality. Select the Harpoon and the Whirl Spell before entering the sea waters and killing the fishmen. Keep going to the bottom and enter the cabin. If you have the Book, then you'll get the Kong's Eye.
Go still to the bottom, then turn to the left and go to the top. Use the Temura Spell to shatter the tombstone. Go down in the 6th secret cave and take the Lakuna's Orb.
Leave the cave and go to the bottom while harpooning the fishmen. Enter the tent to find a broken Radio.
    Area 5 - The Ruins

Go back to the Ruins, choose the internal way and kill Mister Ruins by attacking him from behind.
Area 7 - The Golden Temple

Go to the top and enter the Golden Temple to take the Kong's Roar and the Power Orb.
    Area 1 - The Grasslands

Go back to area 1 and enter the 2nd secret cave. Select the Sword and the Kong's Eye to explore the second part of the cave. It's a labyrinth with a cabin.
    Area 4 - The Marsh

Go back to the Marsh, in the stairs zone but don't enter the cave. Select the Kong's Claw and the Whirl Spell. Go to the top to fight twice against the Ninth Boss, THE TWINMIRES. After your second victory, the access to area 8 will be opened.
Area 8 - The Dark Mountains

Select the Kong's eye before entering area 8. Kill all the cavemen to get the Fireballs.
Select the Fireballs for the fight against the Tenth Boss, REVOLVER. If you run out of this weapon, choose the Club or the Kong's Claw. Your victory will allow you to get the Agnos Key.
Go back to the ruins and pass through a little opening at the top, then go to a cabin in the top right zone. Select the Radio and ask for its reparation by choosing option 2. Kill then a maximum of clingmen and jumpmen to reach level 39 in your profile.
    Area 5 - The Ruins

Go to the part of the ruins on the left of the external way. At first sight, nothing interesting. Select the Power Orb and go to the bottom, then to the left. Use the Power Orb to open a secret passage to the Golden Temple.
Area 7 - The Golden Temple

Go to the top and enter the stairs. Select the Kong's Claw and the Whirl Spell. Destroy the mobile platforms and go to the right.
Attention ! Walls appear suddenly, this temple is full with deadly traps ! Slash the bottom wall in the middle to open a new path.
Go to the bottom for the fight against the Eleventh Boss, SAVAGE. If you beat him, you will acquire an Iron Key. Use it to open the sixth barrier and accesss to another floor of the temple.
Kill then a maximum of stoneogres to reach level 71 in your profile. Think also to slash a wall on the left to open a passage to the Kong's Tear.
Go to the right for a second fight against SAVAGE. The victory will give you another Iron Key. Use it to open the seventh barrier and access to the most mysterious floor of the Golden Temple.
You need to move on the mobile platforms, but be careful ! When you are on the 3rd serie of platforms, slash a wall on the left to open a secret passage.
When you are on the 4th serie of platforms, you need to be at the extreme edge of the 3rd platform to slash the bottom wall and open another secret passage.
Enter the stairs, then go to the top and the right. If you have the Agnos Key, go to the chest marked with a key symbol. You will open it and acquire a new item : the Whisper.
    Area 4 - The Marsh

Leave the temple and go back to the Marsh, at the place of your second victory against the Twinmires. Select the Whisper and use it to open a new passage to area 8.
Area 8 - The Dark Mountains

Kill the batts to get some Meat, then go to the right, the bottom, the right and the top for the battle against the Twelfth Boss, THE CAVERNBIG. You need to have selected the Kong's Claw and the Whirl Spell. As soon as this monster is defeated, you'll get Yellow Stones.
Go to the top way and then to the left.
In front of the hedge, select the Kong's Roar and use it to open a new path.
Select the Yellow Stones to fight against the Thirteenth Boss, THE BIG FLOWER, which hides the access to the final part of the game.
Select the Makapora Spelll for the Fourteenth Boss, THE BAD PRIEST. Your victory will give you some Meat and open more widely the left passage.
The End Boss, it's again REVOLVER but he's stronger this time. The fighting technics remain unchanged, but you can though use here the Whirl Spell. When this monster is definitely defeated, a passage will be opened on the left.
Kill first some batts, then select the Kong's Tear and use it near the gap to make appear a bridge.
Select the Dorian Fruit and put it at the pedestal to free Lady Kong. She will now follow you, but you are no more able to use your shooting options.
Take the inverse way and go to the bottom in the big hall. A direct path to the landing area of the helicopter is now open.
Select the Radio and use it to call the helicopter which will lead you and Lady Kong to King Kong.

The end

This game has a sad ending and 2 happy endings.

You'll get the sad ending if you finish your quest in more than one year (365 days) : you'll come too late with Lady Kong because King Kong is alas dead.
If you finish your quest in less than 366 days, the ending will be happy : King Long will be saved !
The kind of happy ending depends from the number of times you have used the "Continue" option (F5) when you have no more vitality.

If you have used it 33 times or more, the ending will be just nice : King Kong and Lady Kong will live in the happiness.
If you have used it less than 33 times, the ending will be great : besides to living in the happiness, they will give life to a young monkey !
