Spectrum solution

The Captain Trueno is in despair, his beloved Sigrid has disappeared and only Estanislao de Castiglione, abbot of a monastery, can give him some useful tips. There's tough a problem : this monastery has been invaded by malefic monsters. To help him in his quest, his two faithful companions : Crispin and Goliath.

There are so many conversions of Spectrum games for the MSX system, but this adventure and action game, published by Dinamic in 1989 has a specific charm as he uses 3 characters with different skills to explore a medieval monastery.

You will also notice that the game has 2 quite distinct parts : the first part gives a big place to the enigmas that need to be resolved to find the good way, the second part is pure action game without any respite.

  The characters
The main character, Capitán Trueno (= Captain Thunder) is brave, strong, attractive; in other words, he's a real hero. He does not fear the death and wants to find back Sigrid whatever the cost. His speciality : shooting.

Goliath is an old acquaintance of the Captain: he's very static, but his force is impressive and will be used in some difficult occasions. His speciality : breaking.

Crispin is the contrary of Goliath : he's young, thin, small, agile and flexible, this new recruit will be very useful at different locations of the game. His speciality : jumping.

  The weapons
    First part of the game

You start with a normal sword. Some monsters can't be killed with this sword. As soon you have found the first magical sword in the monastery, you can acquire two other ones by exchanging gold in the special menu. The magical swords are terribly effective.

    Second part of the game

You start with only one little blue sword. By catching capsules with the letter P, you can get more weapons and/or more powerful weapons and/or faster weapons. The best option is three big blue swords. If you make an error, you will lose the current weapon and go back to the directly inferior weapon.

  The special menu
This special menu is only available in the first part of the game.

By getting rid of the enemies who want to kill you, you can get some gold, that you can exchange in the special menu. To come in this menu, press on the key for the pause. You can buy a life (5000 gold), some vitality (3000 gold) or a magical sword (2000 gold). This last choice is only proposed when you own already a magical sword. To go back to the game, choose the CONTINUAR (continue) option.

In the second part of the game, killing enemies does not return gold, but talents. At the end of each of the 4 stages, your vitality will be brought to the maximum if you have more than 2000 talents and an extra life is acquired if you have more than 5000 talents.

The walkthrough   Here's a walthrough based on the Spectrum solution with description of the main steps of your exploration. The characters changes are indicated in italic.
    First part of the game

First reconfigure the keys as following (option 3) :

ARRIBA (up) = up - ABAJO (down) = down
IZQUIERDA (left) = left - DERECHA (right) = right
GOLPE (shot) = spacebar
CAPITAN = 1 - CRISPIN = 3 - GOLIATH = 2
PAUSA (pause) = STOP (PageUp with blueMSX)
ABORT (give up) = ESC

Launch then the game with the key 1 (keyboard) or 2 (joystick).
    Capitán

In the gardens of the monastery, little sticky green monsters welcome you on their way.
    Crispin

You need to jump and push the red lever on the wall, then go to the left : you will now find a rope, jump on this rope, go to the top, then the right.
    Capitán

In the external corridors of the monastery, dangerous wolves are waiting for you.
Horrible giant spiders don't wish you well !
    Crispin

Climb on the rope to clang a bell !

Capitán

Go back to the left and open the door of the monastery.
    Crispin

Another red lever to push and you will open a passage ! Climb then to the bell and go down on the ropes. Don't be scared by the big rats !
A passage on the right will lead you to a diamond. Take it and go up to pass through a passage on the right which was previously closed.
This passage leads to a pedestal. To access to the magical sword further in the game, you must drop the diamond on this pedestal and back very quickly before to be blocked ! Go back to the rope and go down, then to the left.
    Capitán

Continue to the left and avoid the little green monsters !
    Goliath

Only Goliath can open this passage, because all is trembling with him !

Crispin

A new rope, it's of course for Crispin !
    Capitán

Go to the right while avoiding the skeleton's attacks (you can't kill them with your normal sword). The famous magical sword is at the end of the way ! Turn then back.

Crispin- Capitán - Crispin

Go back to the big rope on the right, then go down low and find a passage on the left.
    Capitán

Adangerous skeleton is waiting for you in a room. Liquidate him !

Crispin- Capitán

Go once more back to the big rope on the right, go down all at the bottom, then to the left.
You are in the sewers. Don't fall in this filthy water and be careful with all the things coming out of it : balls of dirtinesses and spirits of monks who have lived in the sin.

Goliath

Again some work for Goliath : a passage to open ... Attention ! The dragon is not far and shows himself very quickly !
    Capitán

Time for the hard fight against the dragon who went master of this monastery after having taken possession of his abbot, Estanislao de Castiglione. His weak point is the head !

Crispin

A very long rope, it's for Crispin ! On the top, jump to the right.
    Capitán

You are in the internal garden of the monastery, only some little green monsters and giant spiders are still on your way.
You open a door and get the access key to the second part of the game : 625138
    Second part of the game

Enter the access key (option 0), then reconfigure the keys as following (option 3) :

ARRIBA (up) = up - ABAJO (down) = down
IZQUIERDA (left) = left - DERECHA (right) = right
GOLPE (shot) = spacebar
CAPITAN = 1 - CRISPIN = 3 - GOLIATH = 2
PAUSA (pause) = STOP (PageUp with blueMSX)
ABORT (give up) = ESC

Launch then the game with the key 1 (keyboard) or 2 (joystick).
To get a good idea of the using of the 3 characters in this second part of the game, just look at the demo that launches out automatically if you remain on the menu without making anything.

The access key, that you have acquired in the monastery, allows to enter the terrible world where Sigrid, your darling, is retained captive.

In stage 1, avoid the boomerangs thrown by the Hexos warriors and the rocks detached from the walls. Attention ! Some platforms tend to break down when you passe above, except if you use the Crispin character.

In stage 2, agressive fishes and carnivorous plants are added to all the perils of this pitiless universe.

In stage 3, bats badge you and statues throw ignited arrows, the death watches for you. Be careful with the bridges, as they are not very secure !

In stage 4, indestructible skulls and terrible monkeys do the maximum to bar you the way.

There remains only one thing to do : deliver poor Sigrid, attached to a post. Congratulations!
